General Furniture Care Guide

UPHOLSTERY CARE: Fabric & Leather

 General Tips

  • Vacuum weekly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris.
  • Rotate cushions regularly to maintain shape and even wear.
  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading and discoloration.
  • Keep away from heat sources, including radiators and vents, which can dry or warp materials.

 Spot Cleaning Fabric

  • Blot, don’t rub, spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth.
  • For water-based spills, use a mild soap and water solution; test in an inconspicuous spot first.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners.

 Leather Care

  • Wipe down with a dry or slightly damp cloth regularly.
  • Keep sharp objects away to avoid punctures or scratches.

WOOD FURNITURE CARE

 General Maintenance

  • Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
  • Use coasters, placemats, and trivets to prevent water rings, heat damage, and scratches.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight to avoid warping or fading.

 Cleaning

  • Clean with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth.
  • For deeper cleaning, use a wood-specific furniture polish or cleaner—never all-purpose sprays.

 Avoid

  • Water pooling or wet clothes left on the surface.
  • Harsh chemicals, ammonia, or silicone-based products.

FABRIC CARE: Cushions & Slipcovers

 Stain Tips

  • Treat spills immediately—blot with a clean, white cloth.
  • Use only fabric-safe spot cleaners.
  • Avoid oversaturating the fabric with water or solutions.

General Care Reminders

  • Avoid dragging furniture—lift when moving to prevent damage to legs and floors.
  • Use protective pads under feet or legs to avoid scratching hard floors.
  • Always follow specific manufacturer instructions for specialty materials or finishes.

Industry Standard fabric Cleaning Codes

S - Spot Clean

  • Use a water-free, dry-cleaning solvent to spot clean. 
  • Test on a hidden area first.
  • Don’t soak the fabric or use water.
  • Do not remove cushion covers for cleaning, as it may cause fading.
  • Vacuum or gently brush regularly with a stiff, non-metallic brush to prevent dirt buildup.
  • For spills, blot immediately—don’t rub.
  • Clean stains by working from the outside toward the center to avoid spreading.
  • For fabrics with a pile, gently brush to restore appearance.

W/s or s/w - spot clean or water solvent

  • Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, mild detergent foam, or a gentle dry-cleaning solvent.
  • Test a hidden area first for color issues.
  • Don’t soak the fabric.
  • For deep cleaning, use a professional upholstery service.

x - vacuum only

  • Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing with a non-metallic brush
  • Do not use water or dry-cleaning solvents
  • Consult a professional upholstery cleaner

w - water-based shampoo only

  • Spot clean only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner
  • Pre-test a small, inconspicuous area
  • Do not oversaturate
  • Use professional upholstery cleaning service for overall soiling 

spot cleaning - washable fabrics

  • Dilute a mild detergent in distilled water
  • Use a clean white cloth, blot the stained area
  • work from the outside of the stain inward, to prevent the stain from expanding
  • Do not rub as this may damage the fabric
  • Repeat until all soap is removed to prevent water marks

machine washing - washable fabrics

 MACHINE WASHING  

  • Only SLIPCOVERS in WASHABLE fabrics can be cleaned in a washing machine
  • Fabrics that are not washable may shrink, fade, or be damaged if washed 
  • Be sure to wash all parts of the slipcover to maintain even color and wear
  • Pre-washed fabrics that are not Slipcovers can be spot-cleaned with a water-soluble cleaner but not washed in a washing machine as the seams may unravel.

VACUUM ALL UPHOLSTERY REGULARLY

  • Use an upholstery brush attachment and apply light pressure
  • Do not use an electric beater bar attachment or place the vacuum nozzle directly on the fabric as this may damage the fabric
